'Red Sparrow'" Jennifer Lawrence Goes Spying In First Trailer

If you’ve been waiting for Jennifer Lawrence to break free of the big budget, franchise films, you’re in luck. In the newest trailer for her upcoming film “Red Sparrow,” it’s clear that the actress is moving on from her “Hunger Games” and “X-Men” days. And she’s doing it in a decidedly adult fashion.

“Red Sparrow” tells the story of a Russian spy who uses the power of seduction on her enemies, and the film won’t be holding back from its R-rated premise. “It’s definitely R,” director Francis Lawrence said at a Fox event earlier this year. “When I read the book and I made the pitch to the studio about what the approach would be, this was a definite R. Nobody’s chickened out or got cold feet, everybody’s gone for it from the beginning. It’s a hard R.” Here’s the official synopsis:

Dominika Egorova is many things. A devoted daughter determined to protect her mother at all costs. A prima ballerina whose ferocity has pushed her body and mind to the absolute limit. A master of seductive and manipulative combat. When she suffers a career-ending injury, Dominika and her mother are facing a bleak and uncertain future. That is why she finds herself manipulated into becoming the newest recruit for Sparrow School, a secret intelligence service that trains exceptional young people like her to use their bodies and minds as weapons. After enduring the perverse and sadistic training process, she emerges as the most dangerous Sparrow the program has ever produced. Dominika must now reconcile the person she was with the power she now commands, with her own life and everyone she cares about at risk, including an American CIA agent who tries to convince her he is the only person she can trust.

While Lawrence is definitely leading the way, the rest of the cast is pretty great too. Joel Edgerton, Jeremy Irons, Matthias Schoenaerts, Mary-Louise Parker and Charlotte Rampling also star in the spy thriller.

“Red Sparrow” flies on March 2, 2018.
