Jim Jarmusch Says David Lynch's 'Twin Peaks: The Return' Is The "Best Of American Cinema Of The Last Decade"

You can officially mark Jim Jarmusch as being in the camp that considers iconic director David Lynch’s Showtimes series “Twin Peaks: The Return” so cinematic that it transcends the platform of television. In fact, while promoting his latest movie “The Dead Don’t Die,” the filmmaker – eccentric in his own right – did Lynch one better, telling Vulture that the miniseries is, to him, “the best of American cinema of the last decade, probably.”

The declaration came as Jarmusch was reeling off some other memorable films he’s seen of late, a list that includes “Roma,” “Shoplifters” and “BlacKkKlansman.” Expanding on his thoughts, he called the Lynch project “incomprehensible and dreamlike in the most beautiful, adventurous way…a masterpiece.”

Adoration for “Twin Peaks: The Return” seems to have, somewhat remarkably, only grown in the two years since it aired. Publications ranging from The New York Times to this very own website included it in the conversation for the very best that TV had to offer in 2017, and The Ringer cited one of its episodes as among the century’s 100 best

Jarmusch put an exclamation point on his assertion with a sentiment felt by cinephiles everywhere.

“Why can’t they just give David Lynch whatever money he needs?” he asked. “He needs money to make something; just give it to him! I don’t understand.”

He hasn’t, however, totally ruled out revisiting the “Twin Peaks” universe, and as long as that’s a possibility we’ll keep dreaming it’s an inevitability.
