John Boyega & JJ Abrams Reveal What Finn Was Going To Tell Rey & It’s Not What You Think

Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker” is out and fans have a lot of questions. While the movie is overstuffed with plot and answers to questions that we thought were already answered (like who Snoke is, or who Rey’s parents are), there are plenty of unanswered questions in the movie. And now John Boyega and JJ Abrams finally gave us an answer to one of those questions, and it’s probably not what you think it is.

*Minor SPOILERS for “Rise Of Skywalker” below*

While on the hunt for a dagger that would reveal the way to a device that would reveal the way to Palpatine, our heroes get trapped in some kind of quicksand. Finn, thinking they all might die, tries to tell Rey something really important, but they are saved and he refuses to tell her. This becomes kind of a recurring joke throughout the rest of the movie, with Poe teasing Finn over what he was going to tell Rey. Sadly, this was another thread that never gets resolved in the movie.

Naturally, because we all knew going into the movie that Disney didn’t allow Finn and Poe to become the couple that many (including Oscar Isaac himself) wanted them to be, Finn and Rey was the logical replacement relationship. Apparently even John Boyega thought audiences would pick up on this, as he took to Twitter to tease that “I love you” was not what Finn wanted to say before sinking.

It took director JJ Abrams himself to finally give us a clear answer on this, and it makes no sense why it isn’t in the movie. During an Audience Q&A at an Academy screening of “Rise of Skywalker” Abrams confirmed that Finn wanted to say that he is Force-sensitive. This sort of makes sense. Throughout the movie, we see Finn react or sense when Rey is in danger, but it is never explicitly stated in the film that he was using the Force. Maybe revealing that Rey isn’t the only Force-sensitive characters in the movie might have been something useful to have in the movie itself?

“Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker” is in theaters now.
