'John Wick' Director Chad Stahelski Talks 'Chapter 3'

While there is plenty of discussion about what Hollywood is doing wrong with their mostly tepid selection of summer season blockbusters, that’s not to say the year has been absent of some really good popcorn fun. “John Wick: Chapter 2” was a hugely enjoyable blast of action, picking up where the first film left off, but wisely not going overboard in expanding the world of the movie. It’s the rare sequel that was approached with some amount of thought and care, and it seems that same process is happening for “John Wick: Chapter 3.”

“We’re in that magic spot called development, but it’s going OK,” director Chad Stahelski told The Independent about the status of the film. Naturally, the key question is what the story will be about, as we last saw John Wick hobbling away, facing a ticking clock before every assassin in the world hunts him down. And while Stahelski obviously isn’t giving away the goods, he does share that at the very least, the third film will close the loop on the character.

“We are going to put in something about the High Table, how that all works. We’re going to put in something about where John comes from, and where he wants to go. I don’t want to say too much more, but it will be a nice completion to Mr Wick’s journey,” he teased.

Asked if this means ‘John Wick’ will just be a trilogy, Stahelski said that was the case as far as he was concerned, but obviously, the studio will do whatever it wants. Indeed, Lionsgate is already keen on a TV series, and is currently putting something together.

“There are a lot of ideas being thrown around right now. A lot of people working on it. I don’t know if they’ve locked in a consensus yet [on whether or not it will be a prequel]. But they have some very good people on it,” Stahelski said. For his part, he’s not involved at the moment, but says he’d be happy to join the creative team.

For now, our eyes are solely on “John Wick: Chapter 3,” which currently doesn’t have a release date, and frankly, it’s reassuring that no one is rushing to meet a spot on the calendar.
