Jon Favreau Would Love To Make A New 'Star Wars Holiday Special' For Disney+

For “Star Wars” fans, the 1978 “Star Wars Holiday Special” holds a special place in their hearts. Not that the special is great or anything. In fact, many fans would say that the ‘Holiday Special’ is objectively bad. However, there’s some inherent charm and goofiness that can bring a smile to people’s faces. And one of those folks that hold the program near and dear to their heart is none other than Jon Favreau.

Speaking to ET, the filmmaker who is currently prepping the upcoming “Star Wars” spin-off TV series, “The Mandalorian,” not only talked about his love of the “Star Wars Holiday Special” but also asked fans to demand a new one because he’s ready, willing, and able to help bring the camp of that program to a new generation.

“That’s my generation. I love the ‘Holiday Special,’” said Favreau. “I mean, certain sequences more than others. But I love the introduction of Boba Fett and that rifle that he had. That animated piece still holds up. It’s pretty cool. And I still draw inspiration from that. I would love to, maybe someday on Disney+, we’ll do a Holiday Special too.”

He added, “If you want to see a Holiday Special, let Disney+ know!”

With the amount of content coming to Disney+ and the public’s ravenous nature for all things “Star Wars,” there’s a chance that the streaming service could release the original ‘Holiday Special.’ Or maybe even get Favreau to do a new one. The original special was shown on TV and quickly faded from existence, as fans overall disliked the kid-friendly, goofy nature of the show. George Lucas apparently hated it so much that he refused to release it formally and you can only get copies of it from less-than-reputable bootleggers or online.

However, even if the studio doesn’t go for that idea, you can still see what the filmmaker has up his sleeve with his new series “The Mandalorian,” when it debuts alongside Disney+ on November 12.
