Jon Favreau & Dave Filoni Say 'The Mandalorian' Will Explore The Rise Of The First Order

With an incredible first trailer, it’s easy to see why many fans are saying that the upcoming Disney+ streaming series “The Mandalorian” is the most exciting “Star Wars” project being released this year. And while we know the series will explore the criminal underbelly of the far reaches of the “Star Wars” universe, little else is known.

In a new interview with EW, series creator Jon Favreau and director Dave Filoni revealed that one aspect of the “Star Wars” universe that has yet to be fully explored in the films will be featured in “The Mandalorian” — the rise of the First Order.

As we know from ‘The Force Awakens,’ the First Order is the prevailing rulers of the galaxy far, far away, rising from the ashes of the Empire. But what happened from when we left the galaxy at peace in ‘Return of the Jedi’ to ‘The Force Awakens,’ where the Resistance is fighting for their lives? Well, “The Mandalorian” might have some answers.

“This doesn’t turn into a good guy universe because you blew up two Death Stars,” Filoni said. “You get that the Rebels won and they’re trying to establish a Republic, but there’s no way that could have set in for everybody all at once. You have in a Western where you’re out on the frontier and there might be Washington and they might have some marshals, but sometimes good luck finding one.”

“Also, what could happen in the 30 years between celebrating the defeat of the Empire and then the First Order?” Favreau added. “You come in on ‘Episode VII,’ [the First Order are] not just starting out. They’re pretty far along.”

He continued, “So somehow, things weren’t necessarily managed as well as they could have been if [the galaxy] ended up in hot water again like that.”

It would appear that ‘Mandalorian’ castmember Giancarlo Esposito, of “Breaking Bad” fame, figures to play a role in how the series explains the rise of the First Order. In the series, the actor plays Moff Gideon, a former Imperial governor, who finds himself without a leader after the fall of the Empire.

The two men also said that “The Mandalorian” would be pulling from information that has already been revealed about the time between ‘Return of the Jedi’ and ‘The Force Awakens,’ which has been unveiled in animated series, other films, and the recently released novels, such as “Aftermath” and “Bloodline.”

“The Mandalorian” will be released when Disney+ launches on November 12.
