Kristen Wiig & Annie Mumolo Are Developing A 'Cinderella' Spinoff Film About The Evil Step-Sisters

Barb and Star are heading to Disney to help develop a new film about Cinderella’s evil step-sisters.

According to Deadline, Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo are co-writing a new Disney film that will put the evil step-sisters of Cinderella, Anastasia and Drizella Tremaine, front and center. The film, much like the forthcoming “Cruella,” is said to focus on the villainous characters as they try to keep their family together and preserve their legacy while their step-sister goes off and has a fairy tale wedding.

While Wiig and Mumolo are currently in the early stages of scripting the film, it’s unclear whether or not the duo will also star in the film. However, if the recently released “Barb & Star Go To Vista Del Mar” has proven anything, it’s that these two real-life friends are pretty great together and would likely make amazing choices to lead the cast.

As mentioned, Wiig and Mumolo recently wrote and starred in the new comedy “Barb & Star Go To Vista Del Mar,” which has gone on to become a pretty big hit on streaming. Before that film, the duo first broke out as writing partners with the Oscar-nominated script for “Bridesmaids.” So, with that sort of pedigree, it’s obvious why Disney snatched them up and threw the duo into the development of another live-action fairy tale film.

Disney has continued to release animated films over the years, but we’ve seen a definite shift towards mining established IP, such as “Cinderella,” for live-action features. In addition to the new step-sisters spinoff film, we’ve seen the aforementioned “Cruella,” as well as “The Lion King,” “Maleficent,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Mulan,” and a forthcoming “Little Mermaid.” Clearly, these live-action takes on established favorites are an essential part of Disney’s plan for the future.
