Last night, attendees of the New York Film Festival were treated to a surprise screening of Josh Safdie‘s new feature film “Marty Supreme,” starring recent Oscar-nominee Timothée Chalamet (“A Complete Unknown“) as a table-tennis hustler named Marty Mauser on a mission to become great, any way he can.
The A24 movie won’t be released to the general audience until Christmas Day, as the pic, co-written and directed by Safide (one half of the Safide Brothers), has a supporting cast that features a lineup that consists of Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion, Tyler the Creator, Fran Drescher, Sandra Bernhard, Penn Jillette, Kevin O’Leary, Abel Ferrara, and more.
So, with that, the reactions to the movie are coming in hot with folks comparing “Marty Supreme” to Steven Spielberg‘s “Catch Me If You Can” and Martin Scorsese‘s “The Wolf of Wall Street” calling it “career-defining” for Chalamet who has reached superstar status, with early awards buzz surrounding the pic as the majority of the reactions coming out of NYFF are as positive as it gets. With another great line from a reaction calling the pic “peak grifter-core cinema,” hopefully, they’ll slap that one on marketing materials; it just rolls off the tongue.
Here’s just a sample of the social media reactions to the surprise screening, including from our very own Rodrigo Perez:
We won’t have to wait too long for “Marty Supreme” in theaters, as December 25 is just around the corner. This marks Safdie’s first big solo project since 2008’s “The Pleasure of Being Robbed,” and he co-wrote the script with Ronald Bronstein (“Good Time,” “Uncut Gems”).
