Michael Rooker Calls James Gunn's Firing "Terrible" & Confirms The Filmmaker Will Direct 'Suicide Squad'

Say what you will about his choice of subject matter to joke about on Twitter, but filmmaker James Gunn has a very tight and loyal group of friends. You can see this throughout his films, as the director has been known to use the same group of actors on most of his projects, whether it’s on his low-budget films like “Slither” and “Super” or his big-budget Marvel outings like “Guardians of the Galaxy.”

One of those actors that seem to be stuck on Gunn like glue is none other than Michael Rooker. And speaking at a recent convention (via Comicbook.com), Rooker talked about the recent controversy surrounding the filmmaker and his future in the DCEU.

“It’s terrible, isn’t it? Yeah, but oh well, guess what? He’s on a gig already. ‘Suicide Squad,’ that’s right. He’s writing it and directing it as well,” Rooker said at Walker Stalker Con in Atlanta.

Rooker is, of course, referencing the news that Gunn was fired by Disney after decade-old tweets resurfaced, showing the filmmaker joke about pedophilia and other disgusting things. After losing his job on “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” the writer-director was then hired by Warner Bros. and DC Films to pen a script for an upcoming “Suicide Squad” film (not a sequel, per reports). Now, common sense would say that Gunn would end up directing the film, but that wasn’t confirmed by WB at the time. Now, we have Rooker saying it’s a done deal.

Rooker has always been a vocal supporter of Gunn, and considering his status in the MCU is pretty much over after ‘Guardians 2,’ the actor has nothing to lose by talking openly about the situation. Of course, that never stopped the other Gunn supporter Dave Bautista, who appears to want to leave the Marvel Cinematic Universe after the whole fiasco.

We’ll have to see what happens with Gunn and the DCEU in the coming months after he turns in his first draft of “Suicide Squad.” Perhaps we will see WB fast-track the film into production and maybe steal the thunder from any upcoming ‘Guardians 3’ news. One thing is for sure — if Gunn’s “Suicide Squad” takes shape, expect to see Rooker on board.
