When one door closes, another opens so the saying goes, particularly if you’re famed writer/director Nancy Meyers. While a brewing project written by “The Spectacular Now” writers Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber will no longer have her services, a previous project she was brewing at Paramount before they stuck it in turnaround is now revived.
Variety reports that Robert De Niro and Reese Witherspoon will star in the Meyers written and directed “The Intern.” The story, sounding not unlike an episode of “Seinfeld,” will feature Witherspoon playing the founder of a fashion based e-commerce company, who agrees to a community outreach program where seniors will intern at the firm. And who gets hired? De Niro of course, and his elderly character becomes indispensable at the firm, with a friendship forming between the founder and the old timer.
Seems like an easy recipe for heartwarming comedy, the kind that Meyers does so well. At one point Tina Fey was attached to star but that didn’t happen. Anyway, with these two new names on board it should be easier for this one to find a studio home and hopefully get rolling soon.
