'The New Mutants' Director Confirms "There Was Never A Plan For An R-Rated Movie"

Today is a special day. Not only is it the day after the Golden Globes, where Film Twitter erupts with debates about the host, the speeches, the winners, the losers, etc. but it is also the day that Fox graced us with a new trailer for “The New Mutants.” The first trailer for the film arrived way back in October 2017, making the new trailer a long time coming. And hey, it doesn’t look bad, at all, right? Even if it is just a PG-13 teen horror film with superpowers.

And in a new social media post, writer-director Josh Boone explained that, despite the recent trend of releasing R-rated superhero films and the horror aspect of this film, “The New Mutants” was always envisioned as a PG-13 film.

“The movie has always been and will always be PG-13,” Boone wrote. “There was never a plan for an R-rated movie.”

Perhaps this is a way for Boone to avoid the inevitable #ReleaseTheBooneCut that supposedly features heads blowing up, F-bombs, and full frontal nudity (joking obviously). Given the troubled production cycle of “The New Mutants,” fans should just be happy that they’re getting this film at all, regardless of the rating.

One of the most famous creators to work on the comic book series ‘New Mutants’ (and the man responsible for the story that the film is inspired by), Bill Sienkiewicz, recently tweeted his endorsement of the rating and why the film ultimately succeeds. Though, he probably is a bit biased.

“Scary film at PG-13,” he tweeted. “The atmosphere, mystery, & tone of Josh’s direction makes it work. The cast is stellar, not horror tropes who split from the group 1 by 1 like idiots only to get offed. They’re a team united; forged by the horror, and that’s new take. Bravo Josh & Co.”

PG-13 teen horror film “The New Mutants” will arrive in theaters (hopefully) on April 3.
