Paolo Sorrentino's 'Loro' Teaser Gives First Glimpse At Two-Part Film About Italy's Silvio Berlusconi

Following his short film “Killer in Red” and HBO series “The Young Pope,” director Paolo Sorrentino‘s next project returns to Italy. “Loro” is a two-part film chronicling the life of former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. In the first teaser, viewers get a brief 30-second peek at the two films. The first film is set for release in Italy by Universal in late April, before the Cannes Film Festival.

According to Variety, Sorrentino had been toying with the idea of putting the film into two parts while editing. With the amount of footage he had and was pleased with, Sorrentino did not want to mince any moments of the former media tycoon turned Prime Minister of Italy.

Berlusconi served as Prime Minister for a total of nine years, and currently stands as the third longest-serving post-war Prime Minister of Italy. A controversial political figure, Berlusconi’s life is ripe with enough drama for two entire films. He was featured on two Forbes lists. One in 2017, ranking him the 199th richest man in the world. And in 2009 as the 12th most powerful person due to his domination of the Italian Political arena.

Toni Servillo plays Berlusconi, who we barely have a glimpse of in this first teaser. Sorrentino previously worked with Servillo on the 2013 film “The Great Beauty.” He has also written and directed films, including 2011’s “This Must Be the Place” with Sean Penn and Frances McDormand.

The former Prime Minister was notorious for his antics, including his relationships with women. With deep synth sounds and gyrating women, the teaser features a voice over, asking Berlusconi, “What did you expect? That you could be the richest man in the country, be Prime Minister, and everyone would be crazy for you?” His answer, “Yes. That’s exactly what I expected.”
