‘Paradise’ Season 2: Sterling K. Brown, Shailene Woodley & Julianne Nicholson On Survival, Sacrifice, & The Show’s Three-Season Plan [Bingeworthy Podcast]

Few shows reinvent themselves as boldly between seasons as Dan Fogelman’s “Paradise.” What began as a tightly wound political mystery in Season 1 mutates into something far bigger in Season 2: a survival story, a character odyssey, and a puzzle box full of fan theories that viewers are now happily dissecting online. The world expands dramatically beyond the bunker, pushing its characters into unfamiliar territory and raising the emotional stakes across the board.

On this episode of The Playlist’s Bingeworthy podcast, host Mike DeAngelo speaks with Sterling K. Brown and Shailene Woodley, and Julianne Nicholson about the show’s ambitious second season, the emotional toll of survival, and what lies ahead as the series moves toward its planned ending.

Early in the conversation, DeAngelo asked Brown and Woodley the obvious question raised by the new season: which of them would actually survive in a real post-apocalyptic scenario.

“I think we both do,” Woodley said with a laugh.

Brown agreed, noting that the real challenge would likely be psychological rather than physical.

“Shailene is a strong woman. I don’t mean just like outside, but like internal fortitude,” he said. “She’s a survivor by nature.”

Woodley added that their personalities might complement each other in a crisis.

“You’re more of an extrovert, I would say, more of an introvert,” she said to Brown. “I feel like we would kind of slot into different components of survival.”

That dynamic proves central to the season, as Xavier and Annie spend long stretches navigating a dangerous new world together. Brown said their on-screen chemistry came together quickly because of the honesty in their off-camera conversations.

“The level of conversation that we would have when we were not shooting was as high, if not higher than the level of conversation that we were having on camera,” Brown explained. “We were deeply curious people who were interested in sharing our mutual truths with each other.”

The season’s most emotional storyline centers on Annie’s arc, which builds toward a devastating and poetic conclusion (SPOILERS FOR EPISODE 4). Woodley described the heartbreaking death scene as exploring two of life’s most profound experiences colliding at once.

“Bringing life into this world and then saying goodbye to life — those two things juxtaposed within the span of three minutes,” she said. “But it was also spiritually beautiful… this idea that life does beget life.”

The moment forces Annie to place enormous trust in Xavier moving forward, a choice Woodley believes the character makes sincerely.

“She’s placing a lot of trust in this person,” Woodley said. “But I think she really does trust Xavier.”

Brown also revealed a key piece of information about the show’s long-term plan. According to the actor and executive producer, “Paradise” was always envisioned as a three-season story.

“Three seasons is where we cap it off,” Brown confirmed. “We do have an endpoint in mind… and I think it’s pretty f**king cool.”

That structure, he said, helps the writers keep the story focused rather than letting the mystery drift indefinitely.

“Having an endpoint allows us to drive the narrative forward in a very purposeful and intentional way,” Brown explained.

While the outside world belongs to Xavier and Annie this season, the bunker’s political intrigue continues to revolve around Julianne Nicholson’s Samantha “Sinatra” Redmond, whose character reveals far more complexity in Season 2.

Nicholson said Dan Fogelman always intended Sinatra to be more than a traditional villain.

“She’s not just the evil villain. She’s not just a power-hungry monster,” Nicholson said. “I see her as a fully realized, complicated woman.”

For Nicholson, the key to playing Sinatra is resisting the urge to judge her actions.

“If you get into the nitty gritty of things that she had done… like taking a life… there’s no justification for that,” she admitted. “But in her mindset, she really does believe that she’s doing it for the greater good.”

Season 2 also separates Sinatra from her most compelling adversary, Xavier, something Nicholson felt while filming.

“I definitely felt the absence of him,” she said. “But let’s just say you haven’t seen everything yet.”

As for what lies ahead in the third and final season, Nicholson insists she knows no more than the audience.

“I know zilch,” she laughed.

Outside of “Paradise,” Nicholson is preparing to begin work on Edward Berger’s upcoming film “The Riders,” starring Brad Pitt.

“It’s such a beautiful book that the film is based on,” Nicholson said. “It’s sort of an odyssey of a dad and daughter, and I play someone they meet along the way.”

With its expanded scope, deeper character work, and a clear endgame in sight, “Paradise” Season 2 feels like a series fully settling into its identity. If the first season built the mystery, the second explores the human cost behind it.

And if Brown is right about what the writers have planned for the finale, the final chapter could be the one fans remember most.
