Yesterday, Jonny Greenwood finally earned his first much deserved and long overdue Oscar nomination, for his exquisite work on Paul Thomas Anderson‘s “Phantom Thread.” The Radiohead multi-instrumentalist’s score is a crucial element to film’s twisted romantic portrait, and now it’s getting supersized.
The folks at Wordless Music (who previously presented that live concert screening of “Punch-Drunk Love“) and the London Contemporary Orchestra are prepping two live orchestra screenings of “Phantom Thread.” The first will take place at BAM’s Howard Gilman Opera House in Brooklyn on February 24th and it will be followed by a show at The Theatre at Ace Hotel in Los Angeles on March 2nd (just two days before the Oscars). It’ll be a pretty terrific night to be sure, however I’d recommend seeing the film first at a regular screening. There are so many delicious bon mots that you won’t want to miss them at the live orchestra screening.
However, New York and Los Angeles will be beat to the whole live “Phantom Thread” thing by the International Film Festival Rotterdam, who announced last month they’d be presenting the movie with Greenwood’s score performed by the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra with key musicians from London Contemporary Orchestra on February 2nd. Even more, Anderson will be in attendance. No word yet if the director will swing by these stateside screenings, but we’re sure he’s got a seat reserved if he wants it. For everyone else, tickets for the New York screening can be grabbed here, and folks in Los Angeles and click here.
