While Harrison Ford has always been honest about his lack of interest in Han Solo as a character (though he’ll gladly take a paycheck), he’s been equally clear about this enthusiasm (as much as Ford can muster) for Deckard from “Blade Runner,” and the possibility of playing him again in a sequel. “I’m quite curious and excited about seeing a new script for ‘Blade Runner’ if in fact the opportunity would exist to do another, if it’s a good script I would be very anxious to work with Ridley Scott again, he’s a very talented and passionate filmmaker,” he said this spring. “And I think it would be very interesting to revisit the character.” Well, consider the olive branch extended.
In a pretty weird announcement to send via press release, Alcon Entertainment has revealed that they would very, very much like Harrison Ford to join “Blade Runner 2.” Of course, they probably could’ve just called him up, but hey, now they get some press too. Here’s what they said in a statement:
Warner Bros-based Alcon Entertainment (‘Prisoners,’ ‘The Blind Side,’ ‘The Book of Eli’) has an offer out to Harrison Ford to reprise his celebrated role of Rick Deckard in its Ridley Scott-directed sequel to ‘Blade Runner,’ it was announced by Alcon co-founders and co-CEO’s Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson.
Hampton Fancher (co-writer of the 1982 adaptation) and Michael Green are the screenwriters. While the story is being kept under wraps, it takes place several decades after the conclusion of the 1982 original.
State Johnson and Kosove: “We believe that Hampton Fancher and Michael Green have crafted with Ridley Scott an extraordinary sequel to one of the greatest films of all time. We would be honored, and we are hopeful, that Harrison will be part of our project.”
This is the industry equivalent of a mash note. Will Ford send back a statement through the press to follow up? Time will tell, but actually, everyone has a lot of time before this happens. Scott is wrapping up his Bible movie “Exodus: Gods And Kings,” already has “Prometheus 2” coming in 2016 and just signed up to direct Matt Damon in “The Martian.” So when will this “Blade Runner” thing actually happen? No idea.
