It’s hard to imagine now, but “Big Little Lies” actually started as a limited series on HBO. But the popularity of the series, and the awards recognition that first season received, led to the premium network spending a whole lot of money to bring the all-star cast back for Season 2. Now, for the last couple of years, people have been asking for Season 3, but to no avail. That said, perhaps there is more “Big Little Lies” on the horizon.
Speaking to THR, Reese Witherspoon talked about the possibility of Season 3 of “Big Little Lies” and what might be standing in its way. While nothing is confirmed and there does seem to be quite a bit of emotion surrounding more episodes, it would appear that Witherspoon and her castmates are interested in returning for another season.

When the actress-producer was asked when the last time she talked about a new season of “Big Little Lies,” Witherspoon replied, “Yesterday. [Laughs]”
She added, “I talk to Nicole Kidman about it all the time, too. And Laura Dern. And Zoë Kravitz. And Shailene Woodley. Somebody asked me the other day, ‘What co-stars do you talk to more than any other?’ It’s absolutely the ‘Big Little Lies’ cast. We’re always talking and texting. But [director] Jean-Marc Vallée’s passing was really hard on us. He was our collaborator. He was our friend. He was our brother. So much of that series was born of his imagination and his creativity, so it is hard to imagine a future without him. But there is certainly a deep desire for all of us to connect and create those characters again.”

Obviously, the death of Vallée is a huge setback for any sort of momentum on Season 3 of “Big Little Lies.” However, there’s no denying that it’s a massive show for HBO and a sure-thing awards contender. Unfortunately, even if the actors wanted to move ahead with another season, there’s the looming question of budget. The second season famously cost HBO quite a bit to secure the amazing cast. Now that HBO is part of Warner Bros. Discovery, a studio that has become infamous for its cost-cutting measures, the idea of the network forking over massive contracts for another season of “Big Little Lies” seems hard to believe. That is, unless Reese Witherspoon wants her character to travel to Westeros or maybe put on a superhero costume.
