Rihanna & Lupita Nyong'o To Star In Buddy Movie Directed By Ava DuVernay For Netflix

What started as a dream/meme on the internet has now become a real thing: Rihanna and Lupita Nyong’o are going to make that buddy movie the webosphere wanted.

Ava DuVernay (“Selma,” “13th“) will direct the movie, which has been snatched up by Netflix. This whole thing is kind of crazy, with Twitter users essentially creating the project out of thin air. Not only did they wish for a Rihanna/Nyong’o team-up after they were spotted together at a Miu Miu fashion show in 2014, but they also called for DuVernay to direct and Issa Rae (“Insecure“) to write. They even came up with a loose logline, where Rihanna scams rich white men, and Nyong’o is her computer smart friend. It’s kind of amazing that the quartet of talent are deciding to come together and make it happen.

Word is that Rae is currently writing the script, and while it’s not clear if she’s sticking with the concept, I’d imagine if everyone has come this far, they’ll want to keep Twitter users happy. Production is aiming to start in early 2018, but first DuVernay has to wrap Disney‘s “A Wrinkle In Time,” which is slated to open on March 9, 2018. After that, the con is on…. [EW]
