'Rim Of The World' Trailer: Netflix's Latest Film Is 'Stranger Things' Meets 'Independence Day' Directed By McG

In the early-2000s, you’d be hardpressed to find a more popular director in Hollywood than McG. Transitioning from his music video work (he brought the world Smash Mouth’s “All Star”) to films, the director hit it big with his two “Charlie’s Angels” films. He would then go on to direct “We are Marshall.” However, things started to go sideways in 2009 with “Terminator: Salvation.” But now, a decade later, McG has apparently found new life thanks to Netflix, who is scheduled to release his latest, “Rim of the World.”

“Rim of the World” can be summed up fairly easily by saying the film is basically “Stranger Things” meets “Independence Day.” Hell, one of the kids in the film even references the latter film. The story follows a group of tweens as they go off to summer camp. However, this group of kids gets thrown for a loop when an alien invasion comes out of nowhere. So what do they do? Well, what would any kids in a post-”Stranger Things” world do? They hop on their bikes and try to save humanity.

This marks the second film for the partnership between McG and Netflix. Before “Rim of the World,” the director helmed “The Babysitter” for the streaming service. That film, starring Samara Weaving, was a modest breakout for Netflix in 2017 (and honestly, is a pretty decent guilty pleasure of a horror film). So maybe the director has found his niche with modestly budgeted films for the streamer?

The film stars Jack Gore, Miya Cech, Benjamin Flores Jr., Alessio Scalzotto, and Andrew Bachelor.

“Rim of the World” hits Netflix on May 24.

Here’s the synopsis:

Summer camp at Rim of the World has barely begun when four misfit teenagers — Alex, ZhenZhen, Dariush, and Gabriel — find they’ve got bigger problems to face than learning how to canoe and climb ropes when aliens suddenly invade the planet. Alone in a campground once teeming with people, the kids are unexpectedly entrusted with a key that carries the secret to stopping the invasion. Without any adults or electronics to help guide the way, it’s clear what they must do: band together, conquer their fears, and save the world. An epic action-adventure directed by McG (Charlie’s Angels).
