RIP Lee Hazelwood: July 9 1929 – 4 August 2007

Legendarily mustachioed Swedish cowboy Lee Hazlewood passed away Saturday (August 4) after an arduous three year battle with cancer.

His myspace page wrote:

We are sad to announce that LEE HAZLEWOOD has died peacefully at his home outside Las Vegas, USA, after a three year struggle with cancer. He celebrated his 78th birthday earlier this month surrounded by family and friends from around the world. He passed away on August 4th, 2007, in Henderson, Nevada, and is survived by his son Mark, his daughters Debbie and Samantha, and his devoted wife Jeane.

The post also excerpted the lyrics to “My Autumn’s Done Come”:

Kiss all the pretty ones goodbye
Give everyone a penny that cry
You can throw all my tranquil’ pills away
Let my blood pressure go on its way
For my autumn’s done come
My autumn’s done come.

The entire post is here. As many people have noted, Hazlewood was best known for “These Boots Were Made For Walkin‘,” the tune he penned for Nancy Sinatra. The hard-drinking iconoclastic singer/producer was a self-aware and knowing soul and self-deprecatingly called his 1973 album, Poet, Fool or Bum. He was also probably the most sensitive musician to ever rock the Burt Reynolds’ like ‘stache and we gently wish him into the night. Rest in Peace, Lee.
