Rumor: Sony Working On An Aunt May 'Spider-Man' Spinoff Movie

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Sally FieldUpdate 11/12: According to Comic Book Resources, their contacts at Sony call this latest bit of news a "silly rumor" with “no validity whatsoever.”

Hate to say it, but we called this about a year ago. Okay, we were joking around, but it would seem there are no bad ideas over at Sony, just new ways to irritate Spider-Man fans, and this may be their most incomprehensible move yet (if it’s true).

According to Latino Review, Sony is working on an Aunt May spinoff movie. And sorry, it won’t be a Sally Field-led vehicle (which, if they’re going to do this, it should be, because she rules). Instead, this will follow Aunt May before she becomes guardian of Peter Parker, and will somewhat bafflingly be an "espionage story." Uh, we’re not sure whether to laugh or cry. Hey, Hollywood? Not everything needs an origin tale.

Granted, this is just a rumor and may not be true at all. Sure, Sony maybe be seriously rethinking what to do with their "The Amazing Spider-Man" franchise, but this whole Aunt May thing sounds like an idea being tossed around rather than anything under serious consideration. And given that it’s like pulling teeth to get female-led superhero movies made ("Wonder Woman" and "Captain Marvel" will be the first and they are still a couple years out), Sony countering with "Aunt May: The Untold Story" seems unlikely. That said, stranger things have happened…
