Samuel L. Jackson Responds To Martin Scorsese's Anti-Marvel Comments: "Everybody Doesn't Like His Stuff Either"

It’s a safe bet to say that Martin Scorsese really didn’t think he’d be starting a Twitter shitstorm by voicing his opinion about Marvel films, and superhero films in general. After describing them as “theme parks” and “not cinema,” social media exploded with debate about whether or not Scorsese is on the money or woefully out of touch with modern films. As you might expect, there are those that will defend Scorsese’s every word until their dying breath, who are excited to see their idol put to words the same things they think. But for others, such as Samuel L. Jackson, the idea that Marvel films are “not cinema” is just ridiculous.

Speaking to Variety, Jackson was asked about his thoughts on the filmmaker’s comments. And given his filmography, you are probably not going to be shocked as to how Jackson reacts. Let’s just say, he’s pro-Marvel.

“I mean that’s like saying Bugs Bunny ain’t funny,” Jackson said. “Films are films. Everybody doesn’t like his stuff either.”

He continued, “There are a lot of Italian-Americans that don’t think he should be making films about them like that. Everybody’s got an opinion, so I mean it’s okay. Ain’t going to stop nobody from making movies.”

To say Jackson has a vested interest in sticking up for Marvel Studios is an understatement. A case can be made that outside of Robert Downey, Jr as Iron Man, Jackson is the glue that holds the Marvel Cinematic Universe together, as the enigmatic spy Nick Fury. That being said, Jackson is also one of the best actors out there and has no shortage of iconic films, or dare I say cinema, under his belt. So, he does have the right to contend with Scorsese’s words.

Obviously, this won’t do anything to change the mind of Scorsese. He’s an older gentleman that likes certain things and isn’t afraid to voice an opinion. But hey, if you like Marvel films, enjoy. And if you don’t, then no one is forcing you to watch.
