Scarlett Johansson Teams With 'Ghost In The Shell' Director Rupert Sanders For ‘Rub & Tug’

When actress Scarlett Johansson isn’t donning her black leather outfit for Marvel Studios’ various ‘Avengers’ films, she’s making some interesting, decidedly non-blockbuster acting choices. Earlier this year, she lent her voice to Wes Anderson’sIsle of Dogs” and she’s currently filming the Taika Waititi-helmed WWII film “Jojo Rabbit.” And it appears that next on her list is a biopic about one of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania’s most notorious criminals of the ‘70s.

According to Deadline, Johansson is set to star in a film, titled “Rub & Tug,” about criminal Jean Marie Gill, who became infamous in Pittsburgh during the ‘70s for operating a variety of illicit massage parlors and a steroids ring that was linked to the Super Bowl champion Steelers. Adding intrigue to an already interesting story is the fact that Gill did all this while posing as a man, and used her connections in the LGBT community to further her power.

“Rub & Tug” is set to be directed by Rupert Sanders, who you probably know best for helming films like “Snow White and the Huntsman” and “Ghost in the Shell,” which also starred Johansson but was met with controversy last year after claims of whitewashing. The film is written by Gary Spinelli, who is best known for writing another biopic about a criminal in last year’s “American Made,” which starred Tom Cruise.

As mentioned, Johansson is an actress that always keeps busy, juggling one of the biggest franchises in the world with her more personal career choices. It appears that after she’s done filming ‘Jojo’ and putting the finishing touches on the upcoming ‘Avengers 4,’ she’ll tackle “Rub & Tug.” Then perhaps, we’ll finally see the actress lead her own superhero film, in the titular role in “Black Widow.”

Filming for “Rub & Tug” is scheduled to begin in February. No word on a release date, just yet.
