We’ve been anticipating “The Sisters Brothers” since we first caught wind of the project back in 2015. And now, with the release of the first trailer, we now have confirmation that this Western is definitely one of our most anticipated releases this year.

“The Sisters Brothers” is based on the acclaimed novel by author Patrick deWitt and follows the titular brothers as they are hired to take out a prospector, who has stolen from their boss. The footage in the trailer is gorgeous, as you might expect from filmmaker Audiard, and from the little bits you can see of the performances, John C. Reilly, Joaquin Phoenix, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Riz Ahmed all look as if they’re bringing their A-game to the film.

As mentioned, the film is directed by Jacques Audiard, who is coming off his Palme d’Or win at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival for his last film “Dheepan.” “The Sisters Brothers” is co-written by Audiard and his frequent collaborator Thomas Bidegain.

We were hoping that the film might see its premiere at this year’s Cannes, but alas, that never came to be. So, we’re not sure exactly when the film will debut, but we know that “The Sisters Brothers” is scheduled to hit theaters this fall.

Here’s the official synopsis for the film:

Based on Patrick Dewitt’s acclaimed novel of the same name, follows two brothers – Eli and Charlie Sisters – who are hired to kill a prospector who has stolen from their boss. The story, a genre-hybrid with comedic elements, takes place in Oregon in 1851. The film is Jacques Audiard’s follow-up to his Palme D’Or Winning DHEEPAN, which premiered at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival.
