Writer/director Jacob Chase of “Insidious: Out of the Futrther” (aka, “Insidious 6“) is looking to reteam with Jason Blum and James Wan‘s genre-focused production banner Blumhouse Atomic Monster on a new original horror film titled “Sleepover” as the project has landed at Universal Pictures and will be ready to be released in theaters by next fall.
Deadline revealed the news that “Sleepover” would be coming out on October 8, 2027, with Chase directing from a script he co-write with “Night Swim” screenwriter Bryce McGuire, based on the latter’s original short story. While we’ll have to wait for more details the project is said to be the “quintessential sleepover nightmare,” hopefully, we’ll heading into a scary dreamscape setting (just our assumption from the crumbs presented here).
This is coming after Chase’s latest chapter in the “Insidious” franchise ended up nabbing a solid $60.3 million worldwide at the film’s opening weekend, impressive given the relative modest budget of $18 million and should make distributor Sony Pictures very happy with that return.
Blum is producing “Sleepover” with Chase, McGuire and Bea Sequeira set as executive producers. Also, Lilly Tyson is overseeing the project for Blumhouse Atomic Monster with Cinescape Entertainment involved alongside Universal.
Studios have been falling over themselves to produce and greenlight a slew of cost-effective original horror theatitcal offerings after the MASSIVE box office success of “Backrooms” and “Obsession” (from newcomer directors that had been making waves on YouTube) eariler in the year. As the genre has been a big money-maker, something that has been the bread-and-butter of Blumhouse Atomic Monster for ages now (Blumhouse being part of that movement alongside producing a bunch of sequels and various adaptations, at the same time).
The next step will be securing a cast for “Sleepover” and we’ll have to be patient to learn more about the project as further plot/character details will come at a later date.
