Well, this is some exciting updates concerning the upcoming “Avengers” sequels as “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” director Destin Daniel Cretton has revealed in an interview that they had to bring on Justin Kuritzkes (“Challengers”) to help with rewrites because the film’s original co-writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers were too busy after being recruited by Kevin Feige and The Russo Brothers to work on the scripts for “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.”
This was briefly mentioned in Cretton’s chat with The Wrap, while detailing why they had to bring on another writer to help out on “Brand New Day,” and this would be the first revelation that someone other than original screenwriter Stephen McFeely (minus longtime writing partner Christopher Markus, who McFeely worked with on the last two “Avengers” films alongside “The Winter Soldier,” and “Civil War“) was contributing to the scripts of those two movies.
“Cretton praised McKenna and Sommers’ work, and they wrote alongside him for a spell, but eventually they left for the two new ‘Avengers’ movies, which allowed for [Justin] Kuritzkes to help out,” the outlet frames it. A screenwriting duo known for writing the previous trilogy of “Spider-Man” films for director Jon Watts, alongside doing work on “Ant-Man & The Wasp.”
The filmmaker went on to praise Kuritzkes’ uncredited work (we’ll keep our fingers crossed he comes back for the eventual “Spider-Man 5“) for some of the more “beautiful” scenes in the movie, “When Justin came in, he brought fresh eyes and a new perspective, and he’s clearly got a different perspective with the way that he writes.” Kuritzkes ultimately didn’t get a full screenplay credit but got the “additional literary materials” nod; Cretton stressed that “he was with me every day throughout the entire process to the end of the movie, and he wrote some of the most beautiful scenes in our movie.”
Sounds like it’s all hands on deck on that front, which isn’t too shocking, as Marvel Studios movies tend to see all sorts of rewrites throughout various stages of production, even during filming and planned reshoots/pick-ups (they did help on the “Ant-Man” sequel between “Spider-Man” installments). “Avengers: Doomsday” is going to be part one of the studio’s big event swan song for The Multiverse Saga, as Robert Downey Jr. is playing supervillain Doctor Doom and is expected to take on The Avengers, Fantastic Four, and the X-Men (played by OG actors alongside Channing Tatum) when the movie arrives on December 18. So, the stakes couldn’t be higher that these two movies are firing at all cylinders with expectations sky-high.
We’re still waiting to learn who is going to be coming back for “Avengers: Secret Wars” (although there were some hints in “Brand New Day” about one person), but Marvel might be holding back on that announcement as they’re clearly going to have some issues scheduling their cast and might not want to telegraph characters that might be getting bumped-off in “Doomsday” (The Russo Brothers are expected to kill some heroes in these next two movies, after taking out Black Widow and Iron Man in “Endgame”).
