'Spider-Man: No Way Home' Earns Biggest Pre-Sales Numbers Since 'Avengers: Endgame'

At the beginning of the year, when looking at the film landscape of 2021, it was clear Marvel Studios was likely going to serve as the barometer for how well theaters have recovered in the COVID era. With four films arriving this year, we’ve seen Marvel show just how well blockbusters can do even if there are still folks uneasy about going to the theaters. However, it appears “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” the final Marvel Studios film of 2021, is likely going to become the biggest release from the studio all year, and could potentially signal a strong future as we move into 2022.

According to a tweet from Erik Davis, of Fandango, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” is already breaking pre-sale records, which is music to the ears of Hollywood studios hoping that the box office recovery is real. Fandango says ‘No Way Home,’ in only two hours of ticket activity yesterday, quickly became the biggest first-day pre-sale earner of 2021, beating Marvel’s own “Black Widow.” Not only that, but it is also became the biggest first-day pre-sales since “Avengers: Endgame” back in 2019. And if you have been living under a rock, then it’s important to know ‘Endgame’ is the Marvel box office champion and shattered all previous box office records when it was released two years ago.

All that to say, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” is poised to have an absolutely massive box office total. It would be silly to think we’re somehow looking at ‘Endgame’-esque numbers right now, considering we are still watching theaters recover and consumer confidence isn’t as high as it was in 2019. That said, considering “Black Widow” did remarkably well in May and “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” did incredibly well, also, (“Eternals” did fine, but also was hampered by notoriously mixed reviews), it looks like Marvel Studios and Sony are going to end 2021 with the biggest film of the year.

Of course, the reason behind the massive ‘No Way Home’ pre-sales has to be the speculation from fans about what the film might include. We already know Spider-Man is facing off against villains from other universes (particularly those in the original ‘Spider-Man’ and ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ franchises), but fans are all but certain Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield are expected to show up, creating a trio of Spider-Men, along with Tom Holland. So, with that speculation, fans are eager to see what happens and if the rumors (which have been going on for over a year) might actually pan out.

We’ll find out if fans are set to be excited or bummed, and if the film will break more records, when “Spider-Man: No Way Home” hits theaters on December 17.
