Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Gets Back Into The Alien Invasion Business With 'The Fall'

Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Partners, known for producing sci-fi classics “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” and “Back to the Future,” is dipping back into the sci-fi well by purchasing a script for alien-invasion film, “The Fall.”

Written by Pete Bridges, the movie tells the story of a divorced couple having to traverse Atlanta during an alien invasion to reunite with their children who are home alone. If the plot sounds familiar, it should. In 2005, Spielberg’s “War of the Worlds” followed a very similar plot and starred Tom Cruise as a divorced father who had to navigate an alien invasion with his children. Judging by these similarities and his incredibly busy schedule, it’s unlikely that Spielberg will direct this film himself.

Pete Bridges is a relatively unknown writer. He is best known for writing the script called “Resurface,” which was placed on the coveted “Black List” of best unproduced screenplays. But catching Spielberg’s eye surely has to be worth something.

Amblin Partners has just released the Spielberg-directed “The BFG.” Their next production is Spielberg’s video game adventure fantasy thing “Ready Player One,” which will open in 2018. [Empire]
