Taika Waititi Says WWII Film 'Jojo Rabbit' Will Release In Late-2019 & Share Tone With 'Wilderpeople' & 'Boy'

We now know that Taika Waititi is, for sure, not going to direct the upcoming “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.” But never fear! There’s still a Waititi-directed film on the horizon, the WWII comedy “Jojo Rabbit.” And thanks to the filmmaker, we now know when we can be on the lookout for the film to hit theaters.

Speaking at a recent TCA event, where the filmmaker was promoting the upcoming “What We Do in the ShadowsFX series, Waititi gave an update about “Jojo Rabbit” and explained what type of tone fans can expect in the film.

“I’m doing some additional photography on that right now,” Waititi said (via SlashFilm). “I’ll probably finish it in about April. I think it’ll be around the end of the year, that time of the year for sure.”

For those not familiar with “Jojo Rabbit,” the film follows a young German boy during WWII that deals with the troubles in his life with the help of his imaginary friend…Adolf Hitler. Except this isn’t your typical Hitler. Instead, as you might expect from the off-kilter sensibilities of Waititi, the filmmaker portrays the infamous German leader himself, adding an extra layer of ridiculousness to the film.

“It was very similar to the tone of my other films – not including ‘Shadows’ and ‘Ragnarok’ – like ‘Wilderpeople,’ ‘Boy’ and my earlier films. A fun balance of tone of comedy and drama,” explains the filmmaker.

“Jojo Rabbit” stars Scarlett Johansson, Sam Rockwell, Stephen Merchant, Alfie Allen, Rebel Wilson, Thomasin McKenzie, Roman Griffin, and, of course, Waititi.

And even though there’s no specific release date set, as of now, it’s good to know that fans can expect to see one of our most-anticipated films of the year sometime in late-2019. It would stand to reason that perhaps the film, which is being released by Fox Searchlight, is being penciled in for one of the fall festivals.
