Front Runner, Favourite And First Man Top Official 2018 Telluride Lineup

The Telluride Film Festival announced it’s official line up for 2018 and, if you’ve been paying attention or doing your due diligence there were few surprises.

The big narrative premieres are Joel Edgerton’s “Boy Erased,” Jason Reitman’s “The Front Runner,” David Lowery’s “The Old Man & The Gun,” Karyn Kusama’s “Destroyer,” Marielle Heller’s “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” and Yann Demange’s “White Boy Rick.”  Ralph Fiennes also returns to the director’s chair with “The White Crow” while Ed Zwick’s “Trial By Fire” will make its only festival appearance in Colorado.

A number of titles will screen after their Venice premieres including Damien Chazelle’s “First Man,” Mike Leigh’s “Peterloo,” Orson Welles’ “The Other Side of the Wind,” Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Favourite” and Oliver Assayas’ “Non-Fiction.” Palme d’Or winner “Shoplifters” will make its North American debut along with fellow Cannes titles “Border,” “Birds of Passage,” “Cold War,” “Dogman” and “Girl.” The fact the programmers did not select Cannes standouts “Burning” or “Happy as Lazzaro” is something of a surprise.

Notable documentaries include Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg’s “Reversing Roe,” Peter Bogdanovich’s “The Great Buster,” Morgan Neville’s “They’ll Love Me When I’m Dead” and Charles Ferguson’s “Watergate — or, How We Learned to Stop an Out-of-Control President,” among others.

This year’s tributes will be awarded to Emma Stone and Alfonso Cuaron. Stone has graced the festival with “La La Land,” “Birdman,” “Battle of the Sexes” and returns this year with the aforementioned “The Favourite.” Cuaron previously screened “Gravity” at Telluride and will present his latest work, another Venice premiere, “Roma.”
