As The Playlist reported on Sunday, “The Drama” is a big, big global hit. The A24-produced drama has now crossed the $100 million mark worldwide in just 19 days of release. It’s the biggest hit of director Kristoffer Borgli’s career and a huge non-tentpole success for stars Zendaya and Robert Pattinson.
At a reported $28 million production cost, “The Drama” was already profitable after two weekends thanks to pre-sales with A24’s international partners. Now, it’s looking like a significant money maker for all involved. The domestic total is over $40 million in the U.S., while international has hit $60 million. Standout territories include the UK ($10.8M), Latin America ($7.9M), France ($5.3M), Italy ($5.2M), Germany/Austria ($4M), and Australia/New Zealand ($3.9M).
This is the fifth film to hit over $100 million worldwide for A24 since it began as a small indie way back in 2012. Other standouts include Best Picture winner “Everything Everywhere All At Once” ($147 million), “Civil War” ($127 million), “Marty Supreme” ($180 million), and “The Materialists” ($108 million), a co-financing play with Sony Pictures. That being said, three of those A24-produced titles released in the last year alone and all thrived in the rough post-pandemic marketplace. A notable achievement.
For Zendaya, this is her biggest global hit outside of the “Spider-Man” and “Dune” franchise and tops “Challengers,” which took in $96 million two years ago. For Pattinson, “The Drama” has a shot at surpassing the $133 million gross that “Mickey 17” earned a little over a year ago.
A24 hopes to continue some of that box office magic with Kane Parson’s “Backrooms” on May 29, Michael Sarnoski’s “The Death of Robin Hood” on June 19, and Olivia Wilde’s Sundance breakout “The Invite” on June 26. David Lowrey’s “Mother Mary” expands semi-nationwide on Friday.
