'The Rivals Of Amziah King': Matthew McConaughey To Star In New Crime Thriller From Director Of 'The Vast Of Night'

If you want to watch one of the most unique and stylish directorial debuts of the past five years, definitely check out Andrew Patterson’sThe Vast of Night.” That film is one of the best-underseen films of 2020, and announced Patterson as a filmmaker to keep an eye on. Now, it appears he’s about to level up in a big way with his next film, “The Rivals of Amziah King.”

According to Black Bear International, handling sales for the film, Andrew Patterson’s next film is set to be “The Rivals of Amziah King,” which will feature Matthew McConaughey as the lead. The film’s exact details are being kept under wraps, but apparently, ‘Amziah King’ features the actor in the title role in a crime thriller set in Oklahoma. That description makes McConaughey’s casting a no-brainer.

It’s been a relatively quiet pandemic time for Matthew McConaughey. After a busy 2019, which included three new films with the actor in a leading role, we’ve only seen McConaughey show up in one film since 2021’s “Sing 2” (which is animated and doesn’t really count as an “appearance). However, he’s one of the best actors working today and continually makes interesting choices with his projects. He is heavily rumored to star in Taylor Sheridan’s upcoming “Yellowstone” sequel series, but that has yet to be confirmed.

As mentioned, Patterson made his feature directorial debut with “The Vast of Night.” That film debuted to rave reviews in 2020 and quickly became a buzzy title that year. However, we haven’t seen anything from him since, and there hasn’t been much discussion about what he was doing next either. So, it’s nice to see “The Rivals of Amziah King” get announced.

A release date or production start date for ‘Amziah King’ has yet to be revealed. The film is expected to make the trip to Cannes, where the producers will look for a studio deal. Here’s the trailer for “The Vast Of Night,” the acclaimed 2020 indie that put Anderson on the radar.
