‘The Sheep Detectives’ Trailer: Hugh Jackman’s Murder Mystery Lets The Livestock Solve The Case

For once, the squabbling locals in a cozy British crime story aren’t the ones solving the case — it’s the sheep. With the first trailer now out, “The Sheep Detectives” is officially on the board as one of 2026’s strangest high-concept mysteries. In this countryside whodunnit, the only real witnesses to a murder are a flock of unnervingly perceptive livestock.

Directed by Kyle Balda in his live-action feature debut, the film adapts Leonie Swann’s 2005 novel “Three Bags Full: A Sheep Detective Story,” which imagined a group of sheep trying to crack the killing of their shepherd. Here, that shepherd is played by Hugh Jackman, cast as George Hardy, a man who dotes on his flock, reads them crime novels and then turns up dead under suspicious circumstances. The twist is simple and sharp: the sheep have been paying more attention than anyone realized, and they take it upon themselves to find out who killed him.

On the human side, Emma Thompson, Nicholas Braun, Nicholas Galitzine, Molly Gordon and Hong Chau co-star, filling out the village, police and suspects orbiting George’s death. The “detectives” themselves are voiced by an all-star comic ensemble, including Bryan Cranston, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Chris O’Dowd, Regina Hall, and Patrick Stewart, giving the flock distinct personalities as they obsess over clues and motives that humans miss.

The script comes from Craig Mazin, who has pivoted in recent years from broad studio comedies to prestige genre work, such as “Chernobyl” and “The Last of Us.” On paper, “The Sheep Detectives” sits right between those two phases: a talking-animal premise welded to a real murder story, with the crime-novel scaffolding played straight even as the investigators are woolly and four-legged.

Behind the camera, the film is produced by Working Title Films, Lord Miller Productions, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Three Strange Angels Productions, with Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Releasing International handling distribution. The entire package is being positioned as a broad, four-quadrant crowd-pleaser — the kind of thing that can play as a kid-friendly mystery on the surface while incorporating enough genre savvy and dry humor to keep adults engaged.

“The Sheep Detectives” is scheduled to be released theatrically on May 8, 2026. Watch the first trailer below.
