Homer’s coming back for seconds! “The Simpsons Movie” was a huge hit for 20th Century Fox back in 2007, earning an impressive $536.4 million, and twenty years later, better time than ever for new ownership Disney to release a follow-up simply titled “The Simpsons 2” on July 23, 2027.
This comes as “The Simpsons 2” takes up a previous mysterious spot meant for an untitled Marvel Studios movie, but the beloved animated family is going to fill that void, now. The studio made the big announcement on social media that included a fun teaser poster.
That original movie was directed by David Silverman, a veteran of the series, with a heap of established writers/producers contributing to the script. The creative team assembled for the first feature iteration included James L. Brooks, Matt Groening, Al Jean, Ian Maxtone-Graham, George Meyer, David Mirkin, Mike Reiss, Mike Scully, Matt Selman, John Swartzwelder, and Jon Vitti.
Of course, the iconic voice cast expected to return includes Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Yeardley Smith, Nancy Cartwright, Harry Shearer, Hank Azaria, and many more. We’re also expecting some high-profile celebrity cameos as the first movie had folks like Green Day and Albert Brooks (a longtime guest star of the show) lend their voices, so let the speculation begin on who they’ll try to get for “The Simpsons 2.”
Previously, the show’s creatives said that it was quite a task to put “The Simpsons Movie” together while making the TV series at the same time, which could explain why we’re nearly two years away from a sequel gracing the big screen in the summer of 2027.
Then again, given the resurgence of popularity of animated projects at the box office, it isn’t terribly shocking that Disney is calling upon one of their most notable animated IP with massive global awareness that they got their hands on after the merger with 21st Century Fox.
