After working with A24 on the recent Dave Franco and Alison Brie-starring body horror flick “Together” (which made a huge splash at the Sundance Film Festival), Aussie filmmaker Michael Shanks is reuniting with the studio for an original sci-fi thriller titled “Hotel Hotel Hotel.”
Deadline broke the news of the project that is based on Shanks’ 2021 Black List script and has Adam McKay on board as a producer (becoming prolific for the high volume of projects he is associated with these days) via his production banner Hyperobject Industries alongside Todd Schulman, with Mike Cowap of Princess Pictures also producing.
While we don’t have an in-depth idea of what the movie is going to be about, we imagine there is going to be a twist involved, the main gist is that “Hotel Hotel Hotel” will focus on a man waking up trapped in a “mysterious hotel room” referred to as a “mind-bending prison,” which comes off like it could be inspired by elements of movies like the Canadian sci-fi prison pic “Cube” and Korean thriller “Oldboy.” Certainly, the kind of material that fits nicely in a genre-friendly studio.
A24 is coming away with “Hotel Hotel Hotel” after a bidding war on the project. We’ll be very interested to see who Michael Shanks ends up casting in that lead role, but given the folks involved, we imagine it will attract talent, and we shouldn’t rule out Franco being offered it (only an assumption).
Anyways, we can’t wait to see what the project ends up looking like and how much they’ll be leaning into the sci-fi side of things for the production design.
