“Umbrella Academy” is a superhero project unlike any other in film and TV. Sure, the premise feels a bit like “X-Men,” which follows a disparate group of young people with various powers that comes together thanks to the compassion of an elderly man. However, where the “X-Men” has a deadly serious tone and aims to tackle important social issues, “Umbrella Academy” mixes the serious with plenty of humor, as seen in the new teaser for Season 2.
Netflix recently announced that the new date for Season 2 of “Umbrella Academy” is in July, and to help with the announcement, the cast of the series got together via Zoom (as is oh so common nowadays) to do a webcam dance party, as Tiffany’s “I Think We’re Alone Now” is playing. No, it doesn’t tell you anything about the plot of the upcoming season, but what it does illustrate is how much fun “Umbrella Academy” is.
The series stars Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, David Castañeda, Aidan Gallagher, and Cameron Britton. Steve Blackman, who served as a producer on series such as “Fargo” and “Altered Carbon” is the showrunner of the Netflix series, based on a popular Dark Horse comic book series.
“Umbrella Academy” Season 2 is set to arrive on Netflix on July 31.
Here’s the synopsis:
On the same day in 1989, forty-three infants are inexplicably born to random, unconnected women who showed no signs of pregnancy the day before. Seven are adopted by a billionaire who creates The Umbrella Academy and prepares his “children” to save the world. Now, the six surviving members reunite upon the news of their father’s passing and must work together to solve a mystery surrounding his death. But the estranged family begins to come apart due to their divergent personalities and abilities, not to mention the imminent threat of a global apocalypse.
