Got a Tip?

Universal Is ‘Breaking The Bank’ With ‘The Raid’ Director Gareth Evans On Former Darren Aronofsky Project

nullWell, that didn't take long and was pretty much inevitable. After blowing back the eyeballs of critics and fans alike with blistering action flick "The Raid," Hollywood has come calling for director Gareth Evans.

Universal has tapped the helmer for "Breaking The Bank" a based-on-a-true-story heist flick. An adaptation of the book "Heist: The True Story of the World’s Biggest Cash Robbery" and the Sports Illustrated article "Breaking The Bank," the film will tell the story of the robbery of the Securitas Depot in Tonbridge, England in February 2006, from which over £53 million, or roughly $92.5 million at the time, was stolen, the second biggest haul in history (it was the world's biggest at the time). An armed gang abducted the manager of the depot and his family, and forced them to aid in the robbery. Much, but not all the money has since been recovered, and five people have been convicted of involvement in the crime so far. But perhaps most intriguing of all, it was spearheaded by former UFC fighter “Lightning” Lee Murray.

The studio has had the rights to this one for a while, and in 2009 Darren Aronofksy signed up to the direct the project. Obviously, that didn't happen and he's since dropped out, but they certainly got a kinetic helmer in Evans. Kerry Williamson ("Alex Cross") penned the most recent draft. This is clearly a big step up for Evans, but no word on when it might roll. He's long been talking about shooting "Berandal," his sequel to "The Raid," so we'll see if he still plans to do that next before jumping to this. But regardless, a nice boost for the director who will be getting a bigger and more expensive canvas to play on. [Deadline]
