Will Forte Talks 'Aliens Abducted My Parents' & Hoping For More 'MacGruber' [The Playlist Podcast]

Will Forte is entering a new era of his acting career. After becoming a dad for the first time a couple of years ago, he’s not just excited about comedies such as “MacGruber” and “The Last Man on Earth.” He’s also ready to portray sweet dad characters in projects such as “Sweet Tooth” and his new film, “Aliens Abducted My Parents and Now I Feel Kinda Left Out,” which we discussed on this episode of The Playlist Podcast and is celebrating its world premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

Yes, that’s a mouthful of a title, but it’s the perfect summation of the film. In ‘Aliens Abducted My Parents,’ Forte stars as a father who is maybe, possibly abducted by aliens right in front of his young son. The film then picks up years later with the boy, now a teenager, still attempting to figure out how to find his dad and bring him back to Earth. Or maybe he’s just a troubled teen that can’t come to terms with the loss of his father? To find out the answer to that, you’ll just have to watch the film.

Prior to ‘Aliens Abducted My Parents,’ Forte is probably best known for his work in adult comedies such as “MacGruber” and his lengthy stint on “Saturday Night Live.” However, in recent years, including his most recent film, we’ve seen a new side of Forte, where he embraces his inner dad and doesn’t have to shove a vegetable in his butt for a laugh.

In our discussion, we talk about going from something like “MacGruber” to being a wholesome dad in “Sweet Tooth” as well as his new film.

“I guess it’s life imitating art because I did the ‘Sweet Tooth’ job before I, myself, became a father. I always knew I wanted to be a dad at some point,” explained Forte. “There was always a sweet father lurking inside me somewhere. There are certainly a lot of weird elements to my personality, but I’m definitely probably more normal than people might think based on the things that I’ve done career-wise. This is just a slightly different part of me.”

He added, “Now that I have kids, it is fun to think about trying to do these things that my kids might be able to watch at some point down the road.”

We also talk about the future of “MacGruber,” which went from being an ‘SNL’ sketch to a standalone film and TV series, and whether or not we’ll see more of the character in a Season 2 of the series. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like new “MacGruber” is in the works right now.

“Every step of the way was so unexpected and so fulfilling,” he said about working on “MacGruber.” “And now it seems like it’s the end of the road. I don’t think they’re jumping at a second season. But at the same time, I’ll always want to do more ‘MacGruber’ because of the people I get to work with. So, who knows?”

As mentioned, “Aliens Abducted My Parents and Now I Feel Kinda Left Out” is screening at this year’s Sundance. You can hear our full discussion below:
