Things have been pretty quiet from “The Exorcist” director William Friedkin lately, and six years have passed since his nasty, underrated “Killer Joe.” A slew of projects have been lined up during that time — “The Winter Of Frankie Machine,” a TV series based on “To Live And Die In L.A.,” a TV series based on “Killer Joe,” and a Mae West biopic starring Bette Midler — but nothing has come to pass. But that doesn’t mean the filmmaker hasn’t been busy, as he’s got a new documentary on the way.

“The Devil and Father Amorth” sees Friedkin return to the well of exorcism, turning his camera Father Gabiele Amorth. The film will follow the priest during his ninth exorcism, as he looks to handle the possession of an Italian woman, whose fits and behavior could not be explained by medicine. This is made more eerie by Amorth (who has since passed) and the alleged demon inside of the woman, conversing in Latin, a language she did not know. So yes, it sounds pretty damn freaky.
LD Entertainment has landed the worldwide distribution rights, and while there’s no release date pegged yet, the documentary is in post-production. So perhaps it’ll be ready in time for Halloween or the fall festival circuit. [Deadline]
