Zack Snyder To Direct Long Brewing Afghan War Film ‘The Last Photograph’ Next

Well, it looks like Zack Snyder is done with superheroes. After directing three straight DC Films efforts — “Man Of Steel,” “Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice,” and the upcoming “Justice League” — the filmmaker is going to bring his penchant for gritty slow-mo to a project that has been collecting dust on his desk for a while now.

THR reports that Snyder’s next project will be the long brewing “The Last Photograph.” Knocking around for years, the Kurt Johnstad (“300,” “300: Rise Of An Empire“) penned film centers on a journalist and the sole witness and survivor of an attack on a group of Americans in Afghanistan, who teams with an ex-special ops dude to help find the people who kidnapped one of this family members in exchange for the story. Before Snyder decided to direct, Sergey Bodrov (”Mongol”) and Niels Arden Oplev (”The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo”) had both circled the chair, and at one point, Christian Bale and Sean Penn were linked to star. However, neither actor remains involved.

It seems like this is Snyder’s version of Christopher Nolan pivoting to something more grounded in reality as he did with upcoming “Dunkirk,” but the director has yet to prove he has any sort of grasp on nuanced character beats or drama. That said, the synopsis sounds like it’s more of a genre flick anyway. And really, better this than Zack Snyder’s “The Fountainhead…..
