'Zombieland' Director Ruben Fleischer To Helm Adaptation Of Reality Crime Series 'Cops'

We live in an era where anything can be a movie, from board games to mobile games to toys to sleazy reality shows. And that latter category is where this upcoming project slides in.

Deadline reports that “Zombieland” director Ruben Fleischer is attached to direct a feature film version of the Fox series, “Cops.” The original show which ran for a staggering 29 seasons and nearly one thousand episodes, followed cops around as they busted bad guys, in a pretty sensationalized depiction of law enforcement. But weirdly, the movie will be a “Lethal Weapon“-esque buddy comedy penned by Cameron Fay, which makes you wonder why they even need to tie this to “Cops” in the first place. But given how important branding is for studios these days, perhaps that’s reason enough.

Fleischer hasn’t directed a feature since 2013’s “Gangster Squad,” and frankly hasn’t really delivered anything on the same level as “Zombieland” since that came out. This material doesn’t sound very inspired, but perhaps this is a chance for Fleischer to tweak the buddy cop genre, just like he did with zombies.
