It’s been a couple of years since Jim Carrey tried and mostly failed to relive past glories in “Dumb and Dumber To,” but two years later, the actor is trying some wildly different things. He’ll shortly hit the festival circuit with a roles in two films: Ana Lily Amirpour’s highly anticipated “The Bad Batch,” and “Miss Violence” director Alexandros Avranas‘ “True Crimes.” Wait a minute, “True Crimes”? Festival circuit? Well, there’s more happening beyond Venice, Telluride, Toronto, New York, and London.

“True Crimes” will have its World Premiere at the Warsaw Film Festival in October. The film co-stars Charlotte Gainsbourg and Agata Kulesza, and is based on David Grann’s New Yorker article from 2008, telling the true story of a complicated case which re-opens once it’s discovered that a newly published novel seemingly holds the key to the unsolved murder. We’re pretty curious about this one — the project was once slated to be directed by Roman Polanski — given the talent involved and the source material. But let’s hope the debut away from the starrier fests isn’t an indication of its quality or lack thereof.
We’ll see where it lands for its stateside debut, but I’d wager Sundance, especially since the film still needs U.S. distribution. [Screen Daily]
