10 Things We’d Like To See At This Year’s Emmy Awards

The Emmys are upon us. Whether you’re an avid fan of one show, support diverse television, or just want to watch for the pure entertainment factor, the broadcast is bound to be exciting. We have our predictions of winners ready and our ballots checked, but there are some things we are still hoping to see happen. Here is a list of ten things we’d like to see at this year’s Emmys (no envelope mishaps, please).

1. Stephen Colbert Sets A Fun (If Politically Conscious) Tone
Stephen Colbert is hosting the Emmys at a peak time in American politics. It’s no wonder the talk show host/ sarcastic political commentator was chosen for the coveted role. We’re not necessarily asking for Colbert to use his opening monologue of the awards show as an opportunity to elongate his already hysterical and witty monologues for “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.” But political candor mixed with nominee heckling is a near staple at awards shows. If Colbert has a team of writers as prepared as those on his own show, we’re sure Colbert will be able to seamlessly intertwine the politics of the country with those of Hollywood.

2. Game Thrones Sneaks Its Way Into The Emmys
“Game of Thrones” might not have received any nominations this year, but don’t count the show out on making an appearance. With season seven wrapped and speculation of the final episodes ruling the seven kingdoms and our social media platforms, the HBO show will likely be referenced at varying times throughout the broadcast. Maybe the Night King will make an appearance? Or perhaps Colbert will arrive with a legion of wildlings? Hopefully Peter Dinklage or another member of the cast can make sense of the fan theories. Either way, its difficult to devote an entire night of critically acclaimed television without mentioning the biggest show on the planet.

3. Streaming Services Continue to Show Their Worth
Conflict between films and streaming services has been a fired up conversation for some years. Streaming services like Hulu and Netflix have been receiving love when it comes to awards for some time now. Embraced by the Hollywood Foreign Press, the Emmys will more than likely continue to show the value of shows featured on streaming services, and rightfully so. “Stranger Things” “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “Transparent” are just a few of the shows The Television Academy has given nods to. As far as we can tell, it’s not a trend that will be dying out soon.

4. A Message From the President
While a message from the actual President of the United States would be great to see, we’re not banking on it. More than likely, a prerecorded message from the current president of Presidential impressions, Alec Baldwin, will happen. Again, Colbert hosting and SNL dominating with its record nominations, this is more of an expectation than a hope to see.

5. Pitted Cast Members Share the Love
Multiple categories have costars nominated alongside each other. Not to make out that the nominations are competitions, but seeing fellow cast members sharing the glory with their fellow nominees, who happen to be a part of the ensemble of their show, is again not a hope but an expectation we have. “Big Little Lies” “This is Us” “Saturday Night Live” are just a few nominated shows with multiple actors sharing the same category.
