“Werewolf By Night”
Is it a short movie, a TV special, or a special presentation? Well, since Marvel’s “Werewolf By Night” is less than 60 minutes and will premiere only on Disney+, we’ll file it under TV. Starring Gael Garcia Bernal, Laura Donnelly, and Harriet Sansom Harris, ‘WWBN’ is based on the astonishing tales-like Marvel comics in the 1970s that skewed towards more spooky horror characters like the eponymous Werewolf by Night played by Bernal. Donnelly plays another Marvel macabre character Elsa Bloodstone, and if you remember the recent trailer, you’ll have seen a quick shot of the eerie character Man-Thing. Directed by composer-turned-filmmaker Michael Giacchino (the composer behind Marvel’s “Spider-Man” trilogy, plus “Thor: Love & Thunder”), Marvel’s ghoulish supernatural side hasn’t really been explored yet, and this entertaining-looking one-off looks like a great launching pad for this sub-genre to be introduced and then flourish.
Premiere Date: October 7 on Disney+.
“Let the Right One In”
One of two vampire stories receiving the updated treatment, “Let the Right One In” is based on the critically acclaimed Swedish film of the same name (which would get a U.S remake as well, called “Let Me In”). Following a father and daughter whose lives were forever changed when, ten years earlier, she was turned into a vampire, the show follows the increasingly perilous need for Mark to hunt for human blood to keep Eleanor alive. Demián Bichir, Madison Taylor Baez, Anika Noni Rose, and Grace Gummer star.
Premiere Date: Season one premieres October 9 on Showtime.
“Shantaram”
Charlie Hunnam stars in “Shantaram,” the latest Apple TV+ series. Based on the novel of the same name from author Gregory David Roberts, the series is created by Eric Warren Singer (“American Hustle”) and Steve Lightfoot (“Hannibal”). Hunnam plays Lin, a heroin addict who, after escaping prison, looks to reinvent himself as a doctor in the slums of Bombay. His plans are diverted when his criminal history leads him to Afghanistan, partnering with a mob boss battling Russian criminals. Radhika Apte, Richard Roxburgh, and Alexander Siddig also star.
Premiere Date: Season one premieres October 14 on Apple TV+.
“High School”
Best known for their music, musical duo Tegan and Sara are now releasing a television series based on their own lives, itself based on their autobiographical book of the same name. Written and directed by Clea Duvall and backed by Plan B Entertainment, the series will look at both twin girls’ lives before their musical ambition as they tackle adolescence as teenagers growing up in Alberta. Seazynn Gilliland and Railey Gilliland star alongside Cobie Smulders, Kyle Bornheimer, and Brianne Tju.
Premiere Date: Season one premieres October 14 on Amazon Freevee.
