While advanced word on the quality of the Todd Phillips-produced party flick “Project X” has been a bit quiet so far, after two enticing trailers and with a creative team that includes music video director Nima Nourizadeh and “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World” screenwriter Michael Bacall co-writing this one, we’ve remained cautiously optimistic. Just as the film is set hit theaters next week, the promotion machine looks like it’s about to kick off in a major way.
Just yesterday we saw the party getting out of hand in a series of stills from the film, and now Trailer Addict hits us with four clips that lend a little more context to those images and much more. The four clips pretty much portray the film as a found footage “Superbad” pushed to extremes, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing if the film is as humorous as these four clips are, although from the looks of it the found footage conceit seems to be easily disposable here as it was in the recent “Chronicle.” Included is a scene where actor Oliver Cooper’s character explains to Thomas Mann and Jonathan Daniel Brown why they should throw a party, another where Mann’s character is forced to hide the debauchery from his father over speaker phone, and of course the scene with “the midget in the oven,” are all on display, showing that this could be a subversive little high school comedy.
For those who aren’t aware of “Project X,” it’s your standard tale of three high school nobodies looking to throw the most memorable party of the year, only if you’ve seen the trailers you have a pretty good idea of the insane direction in which things turn. Producer and “The Hangover” helmer Todd Phillips is behind this one, along with “Die Hard” and “Sherlock Holmes” producer extraordinaire Joel Silver, as the pair have been quietly shepherding it along for some time now.
“Projext X” will hopefully bring the laughs when it hits theaters on March 2nd.
