Wyatt Russell’s Cold War MonsterVerse Spinoff Series At Apple TV Adds Millie Brady & Pilou Asbaek, With J.D. Dillard Directing Pilot

Wyatt Russell is getting some company in his gestating MonsterVerse spinoff series at Apple TV, which sees the actor reprising his role of Lee Shaw from the show “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” (Wyatt’s father, Kurt Russell, plays the modern-day version of Shaw). Mille Brady (“The Queen’s Gambit) and Pilou Asbaek (“Foundation,” “Ghost in the Shell,” “Game of Thrones”) are set to join Russell as series regulars. The yet-to-be-titled streaming project is expected to continue to expand upon the early days of Monarch, the secretive global organization that tracks and covers up the existence of giant creatures referred to as Titans (aka, Kaiju).

That’s not all, as the report from Deadline mentions that director J.D. Dillard is going to be helming the show’s pilot episode, and was behind the Korean War pilot drama “Devotion.” This exciting news comes after Dillard previously worked with Apple TV on their high-profile series adaptation of the landmark cyberpunk novel, “Neuromancer,” by William Gibson.

On that one, Dillard both directed episodes (a rare Hollywood project that shot sequences on location in Japan) and co-wrote/co-created the show with Graham Roland (“Fringe,” “Almost Human,” co-creator of the “Jack Ryan” series). The fantastic cast assembled for that sci-fi show includes Callum Turner (“Masters of the Air”), Brianna Middleton (“The History of Sound”), Joseph Lee (“Beef”), Mark Strong (“Dune: Prophecy”), Clémence Poésy (“Tenet”), Peter Sarsgaard (“The Batman”), Emma Laird (“The Brutalist”), Dane DeHaan (“Oppenheimer,” “Dumb Money”), and more. Sadly, we’re still waiting on official word of when “Neuromancer” will arrive on the streaming service (Paramount Skydance‘s David Ellison is listed as an executive producer).

Joby Harold is set as the series showrunner as it will follow “the story of Colonel Lee Shaw (Russell), an American operative who, in 1984, went on a secret mission behind enemy lines in an attempt to stop the Soviets from unleashing a horrific new Titan big enough to destroy the U.S. and turn the tide of the Cold War.” If Harold’s name sounds familiar, that shouldn’t be shocking, as he previously worked on “Monarch,” alongside other genre projects like “Army of the Dead,” “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,” and Lucasfilm‘s “Obi-Wan Kenobi” limited series.

We’ll be curious to see how this latest chapter of the MonsterVerse saga will fit into the greater lore of the franchise at Legendary, as there is a new feature film, “Godzilla x Kong: Supernova,” on the horizon from “I Am Mother” director Grant Sputore with Warner Bros. set to unleash that big event film in theaters on March 26, 2027.
