The Bard’s work has been reimagined in countless ways, in countless mediums, in the hundreds of years since Shakespeare rocked the Globe Theatre. And so it goes, “Hamlet” will now be subject of a new experiment, one that will take the narrative and flip the focus to the female perspective.

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” lead Daisy Ridley and Naomi Watts are set to star in “Ophelia.” Based on the book by Lisa Klein, penned by Semi Chellas (“Mad Men“), and directed by Claire McCarthy, the drama will be set in the 14th century, where Ophelia takes center stage as the Queen’s most trusted lady-in-waiting. Beautiful and intelligent, she soon captures the attention of the handsome Prince Hamlet and their forbidden love blossoms. As war brews, lust and betrayal are tearing Elsinore Castle apart and Ophelia must decide between her true love or her own life in order to protect a very dangerous secret.
Sounds like it certainly has a lot of promise, but when it will be made is not yet clear. Ridley is quickly growing her non-“Star Wars” slate, lining up roles in the fantasy “Kolma” and the wartime tale “The Lost Wife.” But clearly, the actress is eager to put down the lightsaber and start working some other muscles instead.
