Deniz Gamze Ergüven burst on the international filmmaking scene with “Mustang” two years back, and it hasn’t taken her long to make her followup. In fact, the director has not only leaped to working with Hollywood actors for her next effort, but tackles a politically charged true story.
Starring Halle Berry and Daniel Craig, “Kings” is set against the explosive riots that rocked L.A. in the aftermath of the acquittal of the cops who brutally assaulted Rodney King. Here’s the synopsis:
A recluse (Daniel Craig) helps a woman (Halle Berry) and her 12 foster children when riots erupt in Los Angeles following the 1992 beating of Rodney King, in the English-language debut from writer-director Deniz Gamze Ergüven (Mustang).
The Orchard has the U.S. rights for the picture. No release date yet. “Kings” will make its World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival which runs from September 7-17.
