As you probably remember, Netflix and the Cannes Film Festival aren’t getting along very well nowadays. This year, Netflix had hoped to premiere a selection of films at the prestigious event, but the folks behind the festival decided to enforce rules that basically prevented the streaming service from taking part. And one of the films that were then shelved was the long-awaited Orson Welles film “The Other Side of the Wind.”
If you’re not aware, “The Other Side of the Wind” is a film directed by Welles back in the early-to-mid-‘70s, however, remained unfinished. Now, with the help of Netflix, some filmmakers were able to edit together a finished product. Unfortunately, due to the issues between the streaming service and Cannes, the film remains unseen. However, thanks to producer Frank Marshall, we do have an idea of when we might get to see the finished film.

In an interview with IndieWire, Marshall said, “We’re still regrouping after Cannes to decide where we’re going to premiere the film, but it will be this fall, somewhere.”
While that’s not as good as a definite release date, at least we know that the film will be seen sooner than later. As was expected, it appears that Netflix is preparing to show the film as a part of one of the popular fall film festivals. In the interview, Marshall also confirms that “The Other Side of the Wind” will also get a theatrical run, however, the details are still uncertain.

As for the feud between Netflix and Cannes, Marshall, like many, are hoping that a resolution can be found. “Not my decision and not my business, but I do think it’s unreasonable to ask a company to wait three years before screening its product,” he said. “I was certainly hoping that a compromise could be made, because filmmakers do like to enter their films in competition at Cannes. Paul Greengrass and Alfonso Cuaron are major, major filmmakers, [and] it would be great to have their movies shown at Cannes, as well as ours, even though we weren’t in competition. But there’s gotta be a middle ground here.”
As of now, it doesn’t appear that any middle ground is forthcoming. In the meantime, we’ll keep an eye out for “The Other Side of the Wind” sometime this fall.
