It definitely feels like the collective entertainment journalism community has milked “Avengers: Endgame” for all its worth. Reviews, interviews, spoilers, speculation, box office, and everything else have been analyzed to death. But yet, here we are, in the middle of June, with even more to talk about. This is what happens when one of the biggest films of all time is released.
Last night, the MTV Movie & TV Awards aired, and as you might expect, ‘Endgame’ did pretty well, winning Best Hero, Best Villain, and Best Movie (yes, these are the names of the awards). This led to co-director Anthony Russo having a moment to speak to MTV News, as a sort of “one last time” interview, where they talked about the box office battle between ‘Endgame’ and “Avatar,” as well as that “one last Cap story” that made the rounds recently.
When asked about that “one last Cap story,” Anthony Russo was a bit oblique. He was questioned about whether or not he can talk about the idea, in any way.

“I cannot,” the filmmaker said.
For those not familiar, the Cap story that is being referenced is one where Joe Russo hinted that there could be a fun film or series to make out of the time spent by Steve Rogers in this alternate timeline, where he lived with Peggy Carter and grew to be an old man that would one day pass the shield to Sam Wilson, aka Falcon. It’s something that has driven fans crazy since the release of ‘Endgame,’ with crazy theories going around about what Steve did during those decades.
He added (while also diverting), “Here’s the thing. When we were making this movie, one of the great things about this particular movie of the four movies we’ve made for Marvel was with ‘Endgame,’ we were never thinking about the future. Our job in this movie was to just bring this story, this 11-year journey, to the most satisfying climax and conclusion that we possibly could.”
Since Anthony Russo is a master at not giving away secrets, the interview changed to his thoughts about the box office record that still illudes ‘Endgame’ — the coveted worldwide cume that is held by “Avatar,” and sits at $2.788 billion (the ‘Avengers’ film is only $45 million behind, as of this writing).
He said, sort of jokingly, “I try not to focus on it because even if we don’t pass ‘Avatar,’ it’s like there’s no way I want to have a shred of regret about anything associated with this movie. So, I refuse to kinda consider it, you know?”
At this point, it’s clear that the Russos are just living in the moment, soaking it all in. You can’t blame them either, right? They just did what many thought was impossible, bringing together 21 previous films into, as Anthony said, “The most satisfying climax and conclusion” they could. And no matter if they beat “Avatar” or even come back to tell that Cap story, Marvel Studios and fans are happy as it is now.
