“Knives Out” isn’t your typical Whodunnit? film. But even still, Rian Johnson’s ode to Agatha Christie tales is chock full of some of the classics of the mystery genre. So, with that in mind, it makes sense that Johnson would be on board to narrate an old-timey mystery trailer for his upcoming film. And we applaud him for doing so, as the new trailer is perhaps the best piece of marketing material we’ve seen in quite some time.

The new trailer for “Knives Out” begins with Johnson introducing his mystery, evoking some of the best black-and-white intros to films you’ve seen decades ago. The video is noticeably aged, the color images are so very saturated and perfect. And perhaps the best part of all, the humor that is prevalent in the film, simultaneously serving as an homage and satire of the genre, is on full display.
It’s pretty clear that readers of this very site have either already seen in the film or making plans to see “Knives Out” ASAP. So, it’s likely that this trailer won’t do anything to sway you one way or another. However, it’s always refreshing when studios go a bit outside of the box when they market a film.
I mean, this trailer might not win the “most inventive” marketing award in 2019. That honor is likely going to go to A24 and its brilliant “Bear in a cage” toy commercial for “Midsommar.” That being said, there are far worse ways to spend two minutes. So, why not give it a go?
“Knives Out” arrives in theaters on November 27.
